Car rental also benefits from the low cost trend. Brands such as Budget or Dollar often show very attractive prices. If you make your reservation online and in advance, you will find better prices than in a rental agency. You will get the best rates by focusing on standard models in the ”Mini” and ”Economy” categories.

Some rental companies allow you to rent a car for several months. Make sure to check the number of miles allowed per day or the total length of your lease. Depending on the company, you can be asked to pay the full amount at once. 

The legal age for renting a car varies from country to country. In Australia, you can rent a car if you are over 21 years old. Note that rental companies almost always apply additional fees if you are a young driver (under 25).

If you travel to Europe, most companies allow rentals from the age of 21. Certain brands such as Sixt or Europcar accept rentals from the age of 18, under certain conditions (years of driving experience, vehicle category). 

In the US, it depends on the state, New York and Michigan have state laws requiring car rental agencies to rent to drivers age 18 and over, all other states allow companies to set their own age requirement at their discretion. For certain types of vehicles (utility vans and luxury cars) you need to be at least 25 years old. 

To rent a car, you will need to provide :

• Your driver's license
• A credit card in your name
• Proof of address (depending on the company)
• A phone number (depending on the company)

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are the most commonly accepted by rental companies. If you have another type of credit card, please check well in advance that this type of card will be accepted by the rental agency. 

Everywhere in the world, civil liability or ”third party insurance” covering bodily injury and property damage caused to others is covered by the insurance included in the rental price. In many European countries, the ”bodily injury” guarantee covering the driver is included in the basic insurance. In other countries, it is recommended that you take out additional insurance to cover you in case of an accident.

Rental companies also offer several types of complementary insurance to cover the following cases: vehicle repair costs in case of an accident for which you would be responsible, protection of other passengers in the vehicle, protection against theft and vandalism. While not mandatory, these insurances are highly recommended, especially in the United States and Canada where the sums can become dizzying in the event of a problem. The sign must tell you the amount of its deductible, which is the maximum amount you would have to pay in the event of a claim.

If you have a Gold Mastercard or Visa Premier credit card, you may have some protection in case of breakdown or theft. Check with your bank for details of the coverages and whether they apply in the country where you are renting. Please note: depending on the country of rental, some insurances are mandatory and the credit card insurance is not sufficient.

Yes, most car rental companies in Australia accept debit cards, under special conditions. You might be asked to provide additional documents, such as utility bills, proof of resources, proof of insurance, extra identification documents. Make sure to contact the agency to be aware of the conditions.
 
If you travel to Europe, it is also possible to pay with debit cards in most countries, but it is advisable to check on a case-by-case basis by contacting the rental company. If you wish to pay for your rental by debit card, prepaid card, cash, or bank check, you will be asked to make a deposit and/or take out specific insurance.

It is possible to cross the borders with a rental car, as long as you inform your rental company in advance. Also make sure that your insurance coverage applies in the different countries you travel through.

In the majority of cases, the companies will let you cross the borders free of charge, but some of them charge for this option.

When you pick up your rental car, make sure to check the following points in the presence of a person from the rental company and take note of the condition of the car in the rental agreement :

• The bodywork
• The tires
• The mirrors
• The state of the seats
• Front and rear lights
• The mileage, which must be identical to the mileage stated on the contract.

Check the fuel policy to avoid extra charges. Most rental companies operate with a full/full policy (collection and return of the vehicle with a full tank). If you follow this policy, you only pay for the fuel you use.
